A new cycling route which is set to be popular through 2015 is The Sandstone Way; the 100 mile mountain bike linear route is a beautiful journey through Northumberland along the Sandstone Ridge starting at Berwick-upon-Tweed and ending in the beautiful market town of Hexham. The benefits of this new route are plentiful and the boost to the economy is a welcome one. The route passes through Wooler, Belford, Elsdon and Bellingham, just a few of Northumberland’s secrets and with the Northumberland National Park taking a prominent role on this route, you’re sure to be nothing short of impressed.
There is no argument that cycling is the best way to keep fit and see the countryside that surrounds us and the Sandstone Way cycle route provides both benefits with exceptional effort. Throughout the route, you are guided along the geological sandstone ridge and with that comes the pink coastal cliffs at Spittal, St Cuthbert’s Cave, Bowden Crag, Simonside, Lord Armstrong’s Carriage Drive at Rothbury and Warden Law.
This route is being heavily promoted and is infact the first long-distance MTB route to be promoted in England – a fantastic accomplishment. After the initial launch in June 2014, it is estimated that by the turn of the year there will have been a total of 1,000 cyclists using it, rising by 3,000 by the end of 2015 and with that comes a potential £2 million boost to the local economies. Organisers of the route want to encourage everyone to cycle this route and say that this mountain bike route appeals to all abilities.
Whether you choose to cycle all or part of this route, it is sure to lure you back for more… Happy Cycling!
