A new route, The Sandstone Way is 120 miles between Berwick-upon-Tweed and the historic town of Hexham, taken either direction, along the Sandstone Ridge in North Northumberland. Journeying on to Wooler, Rothbury and Bellingham, this county is packed with England’s best kept secrets and after completing this cycle route, you will certainly want to come back for more.
This route has been popular with walkers for its hidden beauty for quite some time already and is their best kept secret, however, investment in a cycle route will see this area of northumberland more accessessible to many others. The sandstone’s features, crags and outcrops which traverse through the landscape are like nothing you’ve seen. The area is steeped with history, geological features and stunning scenery. It links in pink coastal cliffs at Spittal, St Cuthbert’s Cave, Bowden Crag, Simonside, Lord Armstrong’s carriage drive at Rothbury and Warden Law near Hexham.
This cycle route makes good use of double width dirt tracks, single tracks and unsurfaced lanes, bridal ways, byways and Unclassified County Roads, all of which link in on minor roads and surfaced road’s in places.
Produced from a demand for high quality linear cycle routes, especially off-road mountain biking of which this route certainly delivers, is aimed at all abilities. A family would enjoy the benefit of cycling quiet minor roads and would likely take four days to complete, joined by lesser experienced and intermediate mountain bikers. For the ‘fit’ amongst us, it is possible to complete this cycle route in 2 days and some are keen enough to try The Sandstone Way in 1 day, though few will manage it.

Our transfer packages for riders, bikes and bags will vary depending upon whether you’re collected from your home, multiple collection points, transport hubs or the amount of people travelling in your group.
Firstly, if you need to be transported to the start of the cycle route you’re about to embark, you need to establish where you would like to be collected with your bike & baggage. Also, will this be one point for all or does each of your group require separate collections from different points?
Next, depending on the length of your cycle route and the number of days you’re cycling will dictate how many stop-overs you require. Find this out and we will collect your baggage and take it ahead of your arrival to your chosen accommodation, then collect it the following day and do the same for the duration of your cycle route. At the end of the ride, we will collect you and your group with bags and take you back to your pre-arranged drop-off point, again this may be one point for the whole group or individual drop-off’s.
All of our transfer packages for riders, bikes and baggage are individually priced with all of the above taken into consideration. We are very competitive and take care with each enquiry having already transported thousands of enthusiastic riders and their invaluable bikes and even more bags.
