Byrness
Byrness

Byrness is a small village within Northumberland, England. The village is situated in upper Redesdale and is the last village in England, it is often referred to as the ‘village that time forgot’. Beyond here the road through the Cheviot Hills takes you to Carter Bar, Scotland. Settlements were recorded post 1790, probably due to its geographical location being so remote. The most significant happenings came during the building of Catcleugh Reservoir when there was an influx of people to the village. Byrness Church displays a stained glass window, a memorial to the men who lost their lives during the construction of Catcleugh Reservoir. Byrness is surrounded by Redesdale Forest Plantations and it is due to this that the Forestry Commission invested in the village, providing homes for the workers and their families.
