Newton Stewart

Newton Stewart is a town in south west Scotland. Situated on the banks of the River Cree, on the Machars peninsular, Newton Stewart is the gateway to the beautiful rolling Galloway Hills. Galloway Forest Park is another of Newton Stewarts best offerings, incorporating some of the Galloway Hills, the woodland covers a vast 300 square metres managed by the Forestry Commission Scotland, providing vast employment in the area, here is Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park which meets at the edge of The Scottish Dark Sky Observatory, popular with the star gazers amongst us. Newton Stewart’s previous growth was largely owed to the cotton and carpet industries, but today the River Cree provides plentiful fishing of salmon and trout. Close by is Galloway House & Gardens which was first created in 1740 by Lord Garlies and the Newton Stewart Museum is a fascinating look in to the history of the town. Only a short distance away you will find the RSVB Wood of Cree Reserve, a great place to take a walk, with a bluebell carpet in spring and an array of wildlife.
