Wigtown is a town in Wigtownshire, Scotland. Wigtown, close to Wigtown Bay, is described as the gateway to the Machars – Galloway peninsula. In 1997, Wigtown became Scotland’s National Book Town, attracting an influx of visitors from all around, catered for by a high number of book related businesses and the bi-annual Wigtown Book Festival. Wigtown’s County Building and Town Hall is a dominating feature in the town and houses a museum, computer centre and a wildlife viewing room. Wigtown Parish Church and graveyard is the place where the three ‘Wigtown Martyrs’ covenanters are buried, marked by three stones and not far is the Martyrs’ Stake which marks the spot where they were drowned in 1685. Just over the River Bladnoch east of the village is Bladnoch Distillery, the most southerly in Scotland, offering distillery tours and a visitor centre. The River Bladnoch joins with the River Cree in Wigtown Bay, a vast area of Salt Marsh, a Local Nature Reserve, RSVB Crook of Baldoon Reserve it is the largest in Britain and famed for its wealth of wildlife.
